Gravity, Alignment, and Self-Discovery: The Journey to Better Posture

How Standing Tall Reflects a Stronger, More Resilient You

The Hidden Power of Posture

Most people think of posture as simply standing up straight, shoulders back, and head high. But posture is far more than just physical alignment. It reflects our inner state, our relationship with gravity, and, ultimately, our journey toward self-awareness.

Our posture tells the story of how we move through life. Are we collapsing forward under the weight of our burdens, or are we rising with resilience? Do we shrink inward in hesitation, or do we stand confidently in our space? Improving posture is not just about aesthetics or avoiding back pain; it is about rediscovering our center, our true self.

A Dynamic Dance with Gravity

We live in a constant relationship with gravity (or some say the theory of gravity). From the moment we are born, our bodies begin a lifelong negotiation with this invisible force. Ideally, gravity should flow through us, supporting and energizing our movements rather than weighing us down. In fact, it should be lifting us up. Is that what you are feeling right now?

However, modern lifestyles, filled with prolonged sitting, screens, misinformation on posture, physical exercise, and stress, often interrupt this natural balance. We collapse into gravity instead of using it to rise. Over time, this leads to structural changes that also affect our breath, energy, and mood. It also directly affects our perception of reality, so living from our center makes us perceive reality very differently. There is a direct connection between how we hold ourselves in space and how we perceive our world.

Through the process of improving posture, we reclaim our natural relationship with gravity. We learn to move efficiently, to breathe deeply, and to feel fully present in our bodies. This is not just about looking better, it is about living better.

Posture and Reality

Your posture is a reflection of your attitude toward life. A collapsed front body can signal or even create feelings of insecurity, anxiety, or exhaustion. On the other hand, an open, expansive posture can foster confidence, calmness, and clarity. However, too much openness in the front, which many yogis excessively focus on, leads to a closing in the back and front and back (future and past) imbalances. Too much of a good thing is also not good.

Having good posture and being open is not just a puffing up of the chest as often done in many yoga traditions but a growing tall through the crown of the head and your very center. You are growing tall and resilient through your core, which is, in anatomical terms, your Deep Front Line.

Changing your posture means changing your perception of reality. This is because the largest sensory organ is also the one holding our entire body together. This is the facial system. As you learn to lift from within, you begin to shift not only how you carry yourself but also how you experience the world.

The Journey from Childhood to Maturity

From infancy to adulthood, our posture evolves. As children, we naturally express expansion, curiosity, and openness. But many of us get stuck along the way. Emotional stress, unprocessed experiences (trauma), prolonged inactivity, sedentary habits, wrong exercise and training, all lead to physical imbalances that leave us rigid, restricted, or disconnected from our bodies. And just in case you’re wondering if you have any postural imbalances… I have yet to have someone walk into my bodywork practice that does not have any imbalances. We all have some.

Opening the front body and strengthening the backline is our journey of maturity. It is a process of unwinding and arriving truly in life. In the womb, we’re curled into ourselves, protecting the vulnerable organs in the front, and are very much absorbed in our inner experience. As we grow and through the strength and downward current of the Superficial Back Line, we open our front. But only if we fully allow it to. This is, in its nature, a vulnerable but necessary act toward adulthood. Along this way, many get ”stuck” and continue to protect their front, which means they’re not truly arriving at maturity and with the ability to navigate the dynamics of life.

Unprocessed experiences later in life can also lead to a closing of the front as these unprocessed experiences manifest in a shortening of our flexor muscles, which are mostly located at the front of our bodies.
